Argyll & Bute MP Brendan O’Hara made good on a promise last week when he wore the official tie of the Bute Highland Games in the chamber of the House of Commons, during a debate on the effect of Brexit on Sheep Farming.

The SNP MP bought the distinctive navy blue with red BHG  logo tie at the Highland Games a couple of weeks ago and promised the Games’ Committee that he would wear it on the floor of the House at the earliest opportunity.

Mr. O’Hara explained: “When I bought the tie I said, half-jokingly that I’d wear it the next time I spoke in parliament. Everyone seemed quite taken with the idea and very quickly that half-joke had turned into a solemn promise.”

He added: “I was extremely proud to wear the Bute Highland Games tie at Westminster, particularly during a debate of such relevance for the local community.

I have been to the Bute Highland Games on several occasions and have always been amazed at how well organised they are and how seamlessly they run. And I suppose, this was my very small way of recognising and saying thank you to the Committee for all their hard word in making the Games the fantastic event they are.”

Speaking on behalf of the committee of the Bute Highland Games, secretary Kim Findlay said:

“It was very pleasing to see our MP wearing his Bute Highland Games tie in the House of Commons, particularly as he was speaking on a matter of significant importance to our rural economy.

Any promotion by a Member of Parliament of a community event such as ours is very welcome and we are grateful that Mr O’Hara’s chose to publicise his support for the Bute Highland Games by choosing to wear our tie on the first day back after recess.”
