In a small room in Ardrishaig Parish Church, Argyll Talking Newspapers welcomed their local MP Brendan
O’Hara to their weekly session on Friday (11 Nov) to let him see just what they do.
Argyll Talking Newspapers, a registered charity records the local newspapers so that people with visual
impairment can keep up with the news. The service run by a team of volunteers, meet every Monday and
Friday to record the local newspapers and then a they send out memory sticks to over 150 people living in
Argyll and beyond.
Brendan, who was actually recorded a reading from The Argyllshire and the Campbeltown Courier during
his visit, said,
“What a fantastic idea and so simple. It is groups like these which are at the heart of our community. Blind
or visually impaired people can very often feel on the periphery of society but this service helps to ensure
that they know what is happening in their own community and the wider world. It’s thanks to the
volunteers who generously give up their time and much needed donations that this service is able to exist”
He went on to say that,
“I would like to thank the Chair, Morag Hunter and the volunteers who took the time to show me the ropes
they were very patient. When I return to Parliament this week I will submit an Early Day Motion to
acknowledge the work they do. It means that they will be forever recorded in the House of Commons
parliamentary records.”
