SNP ‘GETTING ON WITH THE JOB’ OF MOVING SCOTLAND FORWARD

Deputy First Minister John Swinney today unveiled his blueprint for improving Scottish education – including measures to devolve more power over funding and decision-making to schools and communities.

The SNP has made tackling the attainment gap in schools the priority for this parliament. Mr Swinney today published the Scottish Government’s Education Delivery Plan, which includes measures to empower schools, simplify the Curriculum for Excellence and invest in teaching staff and their skills.

This blueprint for education has been informed by children and young people, teachers, parents, local authorities and unions.

Welcoming the Deputy First Minister’s statement, SNP MSP and former teacher Jenny Gilruth said:

“Improving our schools, and tackling the gap in achievement between children from low-income and better-off backgrounds, is the SNP’s number one priority in this parliament – and regardless of what is going on elsewhere, will remain our absolute focus.

“As a recent teacher, I know from first-hand experience how these plans will improve our children’s learning environment – by reducing workload for our teachers, empowering schools with greater decision-making and ensuring resources go where they are needed most.

“Every child should have the same opportunity to succeed regardless of their background. This is a blueprint to deliver on that ambition – as the SNP gets on with the job of moving Scotland forward and implementing the manifesto which received unprecedented support from people in Scotland.
