Brendan O’Hara MP to join WASPI protesters at Parliament rally
Local MP Brendan O’Hara will be joining hundreds of women from across the country on the 29th June in Westminster, who all have one thing in common. They were all born on or after 6 April 1951 and under the 1995 and 2011 Pension Acts, will not be able to draw their state pension until they are 66 years of age, a full six years later than they had planned for.Known as the WASPI women – Women Against State Pension Inequality, they are lobbying parliament as part of their campaign for fair transitional arrangements to be introduced so that those women affected have time to make alternative plans to mitigate the worst effects of this change.
Brendan O’Hara said,
“Not long after I was elected, I was approached by many WASPI women who told me their individual stories. Women who have worked all of their lives and sensibly planned for their retirement to maintain their independence, now find themselves facing great financial hardship through no fault of their own. These women had been told that they would be entitled to their pension at the age of 60 but instead get hit twice – first when its raised to 65 in line with men and then again when its increased for men and women to the age of 66. Successive governments have failed in their obligation to give ample notice to women affected by this – some have had as little as 2 years and many have received no notice at all – this is unacceptable.”

Brendan, went on to say,
“If there are any women out there in Argyll and Bute who are affected by this, I would urge them to contact me. WASPI women are working closely with a number of MPs from all political persuasions, of which I am one, to urge the government to think again. The Government have made a pig’s-ear of the way they have introduced this, and if they think it will go away, they are very much mistaken.”

The rally will take place from 12 noon on 29th June on College Green adjacent to the House of Commons. More information can be found on www.waspi.co.uk or contact Brendan on 01436 670587.
