Local MP, Brendan O’Hara joined in the fun at the town’s first Spectacular Downhill Bogie Run organised by Smilawi Spanners the offshoot of the successful charity Smilawi who provide free dental treatment and promotes good oral health to people in Malawi.

The volunteer dentists who travel around the rural villages with their mobile clinics need transport to do it and Smilawi Spanners organised the event to raise much needed funds for spare parts to maintain the hospital vehicles and keep them on the road as well as train the local workforce in repair techniques and maintenance.

The bogie run saw local business design and build their own bogie machines and in true Top Gear style were timed on how fast they got from the top to the bottom of the hill, some having more success than others.

Mr O’Hara said,

It has been a great day’s fun and all in aid of the fantastic charity Smilawi Spanners. I first met Vicky and Nigel, Smilawi founders last year and I can’t praise them enough for their dedication and enthusiasm to ensure that people in Malawi have access to dental care and the fact that we now have Smilawi Spanners is just fantastic. If the dentists don’t have transport then they can’t travel around the villages so its vital that money is raised to buy spare parts to keep them mobile. A huge well done to everyone who helped to organise the event, all the bogie racers, local businesses and to community who turned out to support them”
